Here’s what you’ll need:
- Baking soda
- Boiling water
- Glass bowl
- Paper towel
- Lint-free cloth
- Measuring spoons
Once you have everything gathered in one place, you can follow these steps.
1. Put Tarnished Jewelry in the Bowl
If you have a lot of jewelry, you might want to split it up into two (or more) different bowls. While the jewelry can be stacked on top of each other, it will work better if you limit it to one or two layers.
Also, make sure you’re using a glass bowl. If you pour boiling water into a plastic bowl, you might end up melting it.
2. Add the Baking Soda
Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda over your jewelry. You can also use washing soda if you have it, but if you don’t, baking soda will work just as well.
3. Pour Boiling Water Over the Top of the Jewelry
Add enough boiling water so it covers the top of the jewelry. Be careful not to splash any water on your skin as it can cause painful burns! Pour slowly so you have more control.
4. Let the Jewelry Soak
Leave your jewelry in the baking soda/water mixture for at least five minutes. If your jewelry has a lot of tarnish, you might want to leave it soaking for a longer period of time.
You can leave them in the water for as long as you want. It won’t damage your silver, so if you forget about your jewelry for a few hours, that’s okay.
5. Dry Your Jewelry
Take your jewelry out of the bowl and place each piece on a paper towel (or kitchen towel). Next, pick up each piece one at a time and dry them off using the lint-free cloth. This should remove any last bits of tarnish and give the silver a bright shine.
You can also polish your jewelry after this step for an even brighter appearance. However, this is optional.
