The Origin Of White Gold

White-gold--rhodium-platedWhite Gold is an alloy of Gold, Nickel, and Zinc (or Palladium), and is a relatively new alloy, compared to yellow, rose, and red colors, which have been around since ancient times. White Gold has been on the jewelry market since about the 1920’s, when in response to the new craze for platinum, jewelers were scrambling to find a suitable alternative. Although no one is quite sure who to credit the formula to, the first patent for white gold was issued to the Belais brothers in 1920. Today white gold enjoys enormous popularity, with a majority of engagement rings and fine jewelry made in white instead of yellow gold.
