Round cut diamonds are by far the most popular shape. In fact, a little over 75% of all diamonds sold are round cuts. The modern round brilliant cut was discovered by Marcel Tolkowsky (pictured above), who published a paper in 1919 describing mathematically the ideal proportions for reflecting the most light through the top of the stone.
